Mates & Joining Groups

Mates and Children

In order to claim a mate, you need to provide proof of a set number of threads or a period of time during which your character and his significant other get to know one another. Yes, for some it may be love at first sight, but you still need to get to know the quirks and habits of your partner. Once you have completed three threads, the characters can venture into becoming mates. Post in the Updates & Upkeep board to get your account changed to reflect your character’s new relationship status as well as earn your achievement for the feat. Note that the pair do not have to be oppsite gender to claim being mates! You only have to have oppsite gender couples if they want to have offspring.

When your characters are ready to do the deed, they can start up a thread. It is imperative that the actual impregnation of the female is skipped – the thread time-lapses past that deed. An example of time-lapsing would be: “The two of them cuddled close and it was difficult to see where one ended and the other began. Before they knew it, night had come.” For those of you who wish to rp the entire mating, please do so via skype or another means off the site. By proboards ToS we may not allow any mature content on the site!

Wolf mates:

Wolves generally mate for life and finding that one mate is something that happens over time, not instantaneously. Mates happen over a relatively long span of time. In order to be considered a true mated pair the wolves must be together for IRL 3 months or 3 completed long threads. Females may only become pregnant if they are at least 2 years old and the female is going through her oestrous cycle. Gestation lasts 1 month of real-time from the date of litter application.

In the wild it is natural for canines to fight over a mate. Consequently, we allow this on Skoria as well. However, the victor does not claim all the spoils! In the end it is up to the wolf being fought over to decide who to take as a mate.

Let’s say your character and mate are head-over-paws in love. The talk inevitably turns to puppies. Wolves living in groups of 4 or more are more likely to produce healthy litters. While this does not prevent lone wolves from having pups, these litters tend to be smaller and pups may be less healthy. We ask that a couple has been together for more than 3 months, and that they have posted three private threads before being eligible to have puppies. This is to prove that your characters are fully committed to one another. In the case of a one-night stand occurring between two wolves, it is at the discretion of the staff to allow a litter to result.

Wolves come into oestrus twice a year here on Skoria. These are the only times that your wolf may become pregnant. We understand that this may make it difficult. However, rather than having breeding phases, we will be staggering it based on when the wolf was born. Please see the chart below for details. If your character is pregnant; please do some research ahead of time with respect to what pregnancy is like for canines and how birthing occurs. Please be aware that you need to roleplay your character through pregnancy, but you do not necessarily have to roleplay the birthing.

In order to have pups, you must request a litter. The staff generates the entire litter for you. If you have special requirements, you may purchase a custom litter or a custom pup from the shop. Otherwise you get what you are given. Be aware that pups are still subject to the character creation rules.

Pups age in double time, so please read up on the aging process until your character is one year of age. Please keep in mind that wolf pups are born with their eyes and ears closed. These begin to open after 2-3 weeks. If you are playing a puppy, please do a bit of research into when they can see/hear, when they start moving, when they begin eating meat etc. Additionally, offspring cannot be left unattended or allowed to stray until they are 6 months old.

Human Couples:

Humans are a bit different than wolves when love is involved. They can be promiscuous things so they are not considered to be a couple until they “go steady” -in a word. Like with wolves they must have at least 4 completed long threads to apply but in the final thread one must ask the other to share in the other’s life. Not those exact words but something along those lines. They do not need to be an official couple to have a child but if they are not they must have 6 completed long threads together before applying.

Normally humans do not literally fight for mates but would rather try a more passive-aggressive method by one-upping each other. On occasion, though, fights do break out between jealous individuals but that does not mean either of the fighting parties will get the person they fight over. Unless the person they are fighting for is into that kind of behavior, chances are neither of them will be picked for their awful behavior!

Once it is decided between the players of the two characters that a child will be created from the adults and they meet the minimum thread requirement they will be able to apply for a child at staff’s discretion. If they are not a defined couple (no mate application made prior to applying for a child) a fee will be taken from both parties unless one opts to pay the full amount -say if it is for a plot or something. If the application is accepted the fee will be taken and the staff will take information from both of the parents’ appearances and do a random roll to decide on the looks of the child. The outcome will always result in a single child unless a twin is bought separately from the cost of the first child.

If your character is living in a group of 5 or more people, the child will have a better quality of life than if they were raised in a group of less. If your character becomes pregnant while a nomad they will have until the end of their 4 month gestation period to join a group or get to Gettysburg otherwise they will automatically loose the child even if payment is given. Nomadic mothers are not permitted to have children and must seek refuage in Gettysburg or a village in order to keep the child.

Similarly to wolves human children grow up at a much faster speed until they hit the pubirty at about 12-14 "years" of age when their time evens out. The rapid growth is canon, it happens due to a mutation caused by the outbreak. They will have about 5 years of growth in the first IRL month which gives the parents time for at least 2 threads with their infant child until they are old enough to start thinking independently of their parents. Once they hit 5 years of growth they will start to slow to around 2 years per month. Children are not to be unattended, which means at least one parent or babysitter has to be with them at all times, until the age of 4 months.
